About the position

The Intern, Industrial Hygienist - Safety position at Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is designed for students pursuing a career in occupational safety and health. This full-time internship offers hands-on experience in industrial hygiene, focusing on workplace monitoring for noise and airborne hazards. Interns will collaborate with the Industrial Hygiene team, engage in various safety projects, and contribute to the overall safety culture of the organization. The role emphasizes learning, growth, and the application of regulatory standards to protect employees and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct noise monitoring during locomotive train operations and yard activities.
  • Perform air monitoring for silica, diesel particulate matter, and lead as per operational department needs.
  • Evaluate workplace task biomechanics for Transportation, Engineering, and Mechanical departments using Soter Analytics Video Software.
  • Test various biomechanical improvements, evaluate using OSHA and NIOSH applications, and provide best practice recommendations.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to various groups on proper biomechanics.
  • Develop education materials based on industrial hygiene assessments and employee feedback.
  • Evaluate CN's compliance with OSHA Hazard Communication program or COHSR Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System program.
  • Perform spot inspections of hazardous materials inventories and update as appropriate.
  • Resolve if the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are available in the system and update them accordingly.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Minimum 3 years completed of a Bachelor's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health Field or Science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Working towards a Master's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health field.
