About the position

The Intern - Legal position at Commerce Bank offers a unique opportunity for law students to gain hands-on experience in an in-house legal environment. Interns will support the Legal Department by engaging in various project work, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and participating in meetings. This role is designed to provide insight into the functions of a legal team within a heavily regulated banking industry, while also allowing interns to connect with peers through the Commerce Internship Program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal research and draft memorandum on a wide range of topics, including banking, information technology, employment, and corporate governance.
  • Review and summarize regulatory updates and guidance.
  • Review department procedures and analyze for process improvements.
  • Develop and implement procedural updates, as necessary.
  • Participate in meetings with CBI Legal and business stakeholders.
  • Review, draft and edit contract and other agreement templates.
  • Review CBI Intellectual Property.
  • Work with supervising attorneys supporting a variety of Bank lines of business.
  • Report regularly on project progress.
  • Complete a capstone project and end of summer presentation with other interns in the Commerce Internship Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled law student in an accredited degree program.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and accurate legal research using various resources, including statutes and regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Motivated and organized self-starter who can work independently.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
