About the position

Join our dynamic manufacturing team as a Manufacturing Engineer Intern, where you'll gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced engineers and technicians on real-world projects. You will undertake tasks as requested by staff and approved by your Mentor or Manager, assist in design, data collection, analysis, and other administrative/engineering duties, and incorporate academic knowledge into hands-on work to help ensure projects are completed on time.

Responsibilities

  • Phase 1: Learn about basic optics manufacturing via a guided walk-through of all departments.
  • Phase 2: Learn basic manufacturing engineering tasks such as writing and maintaining manufacturing process plans (Routers), detailed work instructions, and Bills of Materials (BOM's).
  • Prepare and implement correct manufacturing process support documentation (RCN, ECO, NOR, II-VI OS drawings, SMP and other special procedures).
  • Assist in setting up Cumulus, Coherent’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
  • Phase 3: Learn engineering design and CAD/CAM skills through basic tool design and fabrication via orders to the machine shop or via 3D printing.
  • Phase 4: Participate in engineering meetings and discussions to enhance collaboration with other engineers and personnel.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in college-level courses with a major in an engineering program (industrial, optical or mechanical engineering preferred).
  • Interest in optics, optical fabrication and manufacturing and/or materials strongly desired.
  • Experience working in a team environment on a specific project is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written technical communication skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet software, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project.
  • Capable of reading engineering drawings and familiar with ANSI/ASME Y14.5M.
  • CAD/CAM skills are desired; Solidworks/Surfcam is preferred.
  • Familiarity with 3D printers is a plus.
  • Skills with basic machine shop and inspection equipment (drilling machine, grinder, caliper, micrometer) are a plus.
  • Knowledge of process design, development, and technical planning is desired.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
