About the position

The Mechanical Design Intern position at Tesla is an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on design and development of service equipment and tools for the Tesla robotaxi. This role is crucial in supporting the maintenance and repair of Tesla's autonomous vehicles, contributing to the company's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. Interns will collaborate with cross-functional teams, utilize CAD design tools, and apply their mechanical engineering knowledge to create innovative solutions that enhance service processes.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop service equipment, tools, and systems for the Tesla robotaxi, including jigs, gauges, and testing equipment.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify service tooling needs and develop solutions that meet the needs of our technicians and customers.
• Work hands-on to build and test designs, collaborating closely with a team of expert service and engineering technicians.
• Utilize expertise in automation and mechanical design to inform design decisions and ensure tooling meets product needs.
• Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, including CAD models, drawings, and specifications.
• Design and develop tooling and equipment for other vehicle platforms for service centers around the globe.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
• Proficiency in CAD design tools, such as CATIA or SolidWorks.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, and assembly.
• Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for cost (DFC) principles.
• Demonstrated experience developing solutions, documentation, and supporting the deployment of those solutions.
• Strong inclination for first principles' problem solving.
