About the position

The Intern - Medical Illustration position at the American Medical Association (AMA) offers an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in creating visual content for scholarly publications. This hybrid role involves working closely with the Scientific Publication team to develop accurate medical and scientific illustrations for JAMA and JAMA Network publications, while also participating in various departmental activities.

Responsibilities

  • Creates original illustrations and data displays for scientific articles, Patient Pages, and Medical News in collaboration with authors and JAMA and JAMA Network editorial and production staff.
  • Evaluates submitted illustrations, data displays, and multimedia content for accuracy and suitability for publication.
  • Completes research as necessary for conceptual development of illustrations and data displays.
  • Observes and participates in the daily activities of the medical illustration staff, including department meetings, manuscript meetings, and collaboration with other graphics and media staff.

Requirements

  • Second year student at the University of Illinois at Chicago working towards a Master's degree in Biomedical Visualization required.
  • Excellent drawing skills are required, with the ability to visualize spatial relationships, anatomy, and the human figure accurately.
  • Strong research skills required.
  • Strong scientific background, including understanding of anatomy, genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry required.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) required.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong skills in typography and layout preferred.
