About the position

Michigan Paving and Materials, a vertically integrated CRH company, is seeking a summer intern in the field of Mine Engineering. This internship is designed for students currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or trade school, and it will take place in Monroe, MI, starting between mid-May and early June 2025, running through August 2025. The company emphasizes the importance of its employees in driving success and focuses on their development and advancement opportunities. Interns will have the chance to work in both outdoor and indoor conditions, gaining hands-on experience in the mining industry. The intern will collaborate with others in geographical exploration, reviewing maps and drilling logs to assess the location, size, accessibility, and estimated volumes of mineral deposits. They will assist in long-range planning designs and data analysis, while also being responsible for detecting safety hazards and adhering to state and federal regulations set forth by agencies such as the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The role will also involve operating sUAVs for mine planning, topography mapping, and stripping calculations, as well as spending time in field operations for aggregates and working with operations on monthly projections. Interns will shadow operations personnel to learn about operational planning and aggregate objectives, and they will collaborate with crews and managers on blasting operations. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the mining sector while contributing to the company's commitment to quality construction materials and value-added services.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates and conducts geographical exploration by reviewing maps and drilling logs to determine location, size, accessibility, and estimated volumes of deposits.
  • Assists in determining long-range planning designs and data.
  • Detects safety hazards and responds accordingly.
  • Adheres to state and federal regulations set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, MSHA, or other regulatory agencies.
  • Operates sUAV for mine planning, topography mapping, and stripping calculations.
  • Engages in Quality Control/Quality Assurance activities.
  • Spends time in field operations for aggregates.
  • Works with operations on monthly projections.
  • Shadows operations personnel to learn operational planning and aggregate objectives.
  • Collaborates with crews and managers on blasting operations.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college degree program related to the industry.
  • Maintains a minimum GPA of 2.75 or better.
  • Passes pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Maintains a current driver's license that meets state requirements.
  • Willing to obtain MSHA New Miner Training and FAA Part 107 Certification for sUAV Operator.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of utilizing the internet effectively for research and evaluation.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
