About the position

Join Nelnet as a Cybersecurity Intern and gain hands-on experience in the field of cybersecurity. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on real projects that matter, while receiving mentorship and training from industry experts. Interns will engage in ethical hacking, penetration testing, and vulnerability assessments, contributing to the security of data for universities, healthcare institutions, and government agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Help conduct vulnerability scans and penetration testing using industry tools.
  • Assist in web application testing aligned with OWASP standards.
  • Learn to simulate real-world attacks to assess system security with guidance.
  • Review vulnerability data, identify issues, and help document findings.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop security recommendations and prepare customer reports.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to sharpen cybersecurity skills.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of network infrastructure, operating systems, and common security vulnerabilities.
  • Curiosity and passion for cybersecurity, particularly ethical hacking.
  • Familiarity with networks, operating systems, and common security vulnerabilities.
  • Basic technical skills, including knowledge of Linux and Windows environments, and tools like Nmap or Wireshark.
  • Understanding of key cybersecurity concepts, such as vulnerability scanning and threat modeling.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with teammates and explaining technical concepts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Python, Bash, or PowerShell for security tasks or automation.
  • Interest in pursuing security certifications like CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), or Offensive Security certifications.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity standards like PCI DSS, NIST 800-53, and ISO/IEC 27001.
  • Knowledge of penetration testing techniques and methodologies.
  • Understanding of web vulnerabilities and OWASP's Top 10 security risks.
