About the position

The Climate Science Intern position at Sandia National Laboratories offers graduate students the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research alongside experts in the field. Interns will tackle challenges related to climate modeling and the interactions of various Earth systems, contributing to impactful research suitable for publication. The role emphasizes hands-on experience, technical seminars, and collaboration within cross-disciplinary teams, all aimed at supporting national security through innovative climate science solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in modeling and understanding interactions between Earth's systems.
  • Conduct analytical climate science activities including computer simulation and data inversion.
  • Collaborate with mentors and team members to deliver high-impact research results.
  • Participate in technical seminars and facility tours to gain insights into various scientific disciplines.
  • Present research findings at the end-of-year FORCEE symposium.

Requirements

  • Earned bachelor's degree.
  • Currently enrolled full-time in a graduate program in science, engineering, or math.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • B.S. in mathematics, physics, earth sciences, computer science, or a related area.
  • Enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. program with an emphasis in climate science.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills.
  • Proficiency with modern computer languages (e.g., PYTHON, R, MATLAB, C/C++, FORTRAN-XX, MPI, Jupyter, Julia).
  • Experience with modular software development practices.
  • Experience with laboratory and/or field procedures.
  • Research documentation experience.
