About the position

The Legal Intern position at the Office of the Public Defender offers a unique opportunity for law students to gain practical, hands-on experience in a fast-paced legal environment. Interns will work closely with experienced attorneys and legal professionals, assisting in various aspects of trial work and legal representation for underserved clients. This temporary role is designed to coincide with the academic semester, providing interns with valuable insights into the legal field while contributing to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and assist with various aspects of trial work, including jury selection
  • Assist in trial preparation
  • Attend and participate in witness interviews
  • Attend various hearing types, including status conferences, settlement conferences, and evidentiary hearings
  • Draft and edit pleadings
  • Meet with clients both in and out of jail
  • Research legal issues
  • Write legal memoranda
  • Review case files and assist assigned attorneys with additional needs
  • Participate in trainings related to criminal defense and development of trial skills

Requirements

  • Completion of one year of Law School
