About the position

The Internal Auditor at First Interstate BancSystem plays a crucial role in supporting the organization’s strategic objectives by employing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and internal controls. This position involves performing internal audit work across all areas of the organization, contributing to the overall audit plan. The Internal Auditor is responsible for conducting financial, operational, and compliance audits, ensuring that all audit activities are completed within budgeted timeframes and in accordance with the approved audit program. In this role, the Internal Auditor will research, plan, and lead various audit projects, monitoring the progress of work assigned to others while providing assistance and guidance. They will review the work performed to ensure that objectives are met and findings are substantiated. The auditor will examine and analyze accounting records, operations, policies, and procedures to determine the validity and propriety of financial records, the effectiveness of controls, the efficiency of operations, and compliance with applicable laws and policies. The Internal Auditor will apply appropriate audit procedures to ensure that controls are tested and significant risks are addressed. They will identify, develop, and present audit issues and recommendations through written and verbal presentations to various levels of management. Additionally, the auditor will assist external auditors, regulators, and other third parties as assigned, while building relationships with auditees and representing the Internal Audit department in various committee and relationship assignments. Professional development is encouraged, with opportunities for external and internal training and professional association memberships. The Internal Auditor will also be responsible for performing internal quality assurance reviews of work papers in accordance with the Internal Audit’s Quality Assurance Program and adhering to the IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. Other duties and special projects may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned audit test work in accordance with the approved audit program on financial, operational, and compliance audits and projects within budgeted timeframes.
  • Research, plan, and in-charge financial, operational, and compliance audits and projects.
  • Monitor the progress of work assigned to others, providing assistance and guidance, and reviewing work performed to ensure objectives are met and findings are properly substantiated.
  • Examine and analyze accounting records, operations, policies, and procedures to determine the validity and propriety of financial records, effectiveness of controls, efficiency of operations, and compliance with laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Apply appropriate audit procedures to ensure that controls are tested and significant risks are addressed.
  • Identify, develop, and present audit issues and recommendations in written and verbal presentations to various levels of management.
  • Assist external auditors, regulators, and other third parties as assigned.
  • Build relationships with auditees and represent Internal Audit in various committee and relationship assignments.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities, including external and internal training and professional association memberships.
  • Perform internal quality assurance reviews of work papers in accordance with Internal Audit's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Adhere to the IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
  • Perform other duties/special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in accounting, finance, management or information systems from a four-year college or university or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred 2+ years of recent public accounting, banking, or internal audit experience.
  • Professional certifications (CPA, CIA, CBA, CISA, CFSA or CISSP) are desirable, but not required.
  • Understanding of financial reporting requirements, banking processes, and related laws and regulations.
  • Strong critical thinking, fraud detection, and conflict management skills.
  • Good knowledge of analytical techniques used to identify and resolve problems.
  • Proficient user of basic Microsoft programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams).
  • Knowledge of bank information systems is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional certifications (CPA, CIA, CBA, CISA, CFSA or CISSP) are desirable, but not required.
