About the position

Google's in-house tax team is a dynamic group of professionals who specialize in corporate tax, particularly in the areas of international tax and sales and use tax. This team is composed of knowledgeable and perceptive individuals who possess a deep understanding of the tax issues that are most relevant to internet companies. As an International Tax Counsel, you will leverage your extensive experience in tax to facilitate effective tax decision-making for Googlers, ensuring compliance while also streamlining and automating tax processes and systems. Your role will involve managing a variety of tax planning issues for Alphabet and Google, which will help accelerate business objectives and address complex tax technical issues that impact the company. In this position, you will be responsible for researching tax rules and regulations, applying these rules to specific business facts, and drafting memoranda and communications to convey key tax issues to management and other team members. You will assist in the implementation of legal transactions that support business objectives, providing international tax advice on matters such as distributions, intercompany loans, and other funding activities. Additionally, you will advise on special technical projects and collaborate with local finance and legal teams while managing external service providers. Your expertise will also be crucial in designing and reviewing processes to meet technical tax requirements, assisting with audit inquiries, and contributing to quarterly and year-end international tax provision and compliance processes. Staying current with the latest tax developments, legislative changes, and their implications for provisions will be essential in this role. The International Tax Planning team is committed to finding innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with tax regulations, making this a pivotal role within Google's Finance organization.

Responsibilities

  • Research tax rules and regulations, and apply tax rules to business facts.
  • Draft memoranda and other communications to communicate key tax issues to management and other tax team members.
  • Assist with implementation of legal transactions to support business objectives, including providing international tax advice on distributions, intercompany loans, and other funding activities.
  • Advise on special/ad hoc technical projects and assist with other international tax related projects as necessary.
  • Liaise and coordinate with local finance and legal teams, and manage external service providers.
  • Assist with the design and review of processes to meet technical tax requirements.
  • Assist with audit inquiries and presentations.
  • Assist with quarterly and year-end international tax provision and compliance processes.
  • Stay up-to-date with latest tax developments, legislative and regulatory changes, and provision implications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in tax.
  • 7 years of experience in international tax with a law firm, accounting firm, or in-house tax department.

Nice-to-haves

  • Juris Doctor.
  • Understanding of and experience with the taxation of cross-border transactions and sales, including familiarity with CFC regimes, FDII, and Pillar 2.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, work on multiple projects simultaneously, work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent research and project management skills, including ability to develop creative and practical solutions to ambiguous problems with limited legal precedent.
  • Strong people and communication skills to interact with all levels of the Finance organization.
  • Open to learning and using automation technologies to make data-driven planning decisions more efficiently.
