About the position

The Georgia Coastal Bird Ambassador Crew Leader internship offers a unique opportunity for individuals to lead volunteer efforts in shorebird conservation on Tybee Island, Georgia. The intern will engage with the public, conduct monitoring surveys, and support wildlife viewing initiatives to raise awareness about shorebird and seabird disturbances. This role involves collaboration with the Shorebird Biologist and participation in community outreach and education programs, providing a hands-on experience in conservation and volunteer management.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a lead volunteer for Georgia Coastal Bird Ambassadors, managing and engaging with the current volunteer group.
  • Conduct shorebird disturbance monitoring surveys to collect data for management decisions.
  • Provide wildlife viewing opportunities for visitors and community members on Tybee Island's beaches.
  • Assist with tabling events, school programs, and outreach efforts related to shorebird conservation.
  • Encourage volunteers to interact positively with the public and relay concerns to Manomet.
  • Monitor seabird and shorebird roosting and nesting sites, minimizing human disturbance.
  • Engage with the public through bird walks and educational outreach.
  • Maintain volunteer equipment and coordinate with Manomet staff as necessary.
  • Complete shift reports and encourage volunteers to document their activities.
  • Conduct surveys using established protocols and ensure accurate data collection.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and personal transportation to travel to events and beach sites.
  • Must have local housing; housing is not provided for this internship.
  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred or in-progress.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with conservation projects and community engagement events.
  • Interest in shorebird conservation and bird identification experience.
  • Experience with social media and media creation tools.

Benefits

  • Paid internship at $16 per hour.
  • Flexible hours: 15-25 hours per week, not exceeding 25 hours per week.
