About the position

Calpine Corporation is seeking an intern for its Strategic Development team, providing a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the energy sector, particularly in clean energy initiatives. As America's largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources, Calpine operates a fleet of 77 power plants, generating over 27,000 megawatts of capacity. The internship will allow you to work closely with experienced leaders across various departments, offering broad exposure to business development in areas such as geothermal power generation, carbon capture sequestration, and battery storage. During the internship, you will assist in project development, learning about critical processes such as site selection, stakeholder engagement, entitlement acquisition, and transmission interconnection management. You will also have the opportunity to prepare financial models and presentations for meetings with counterparties, coordinating closely with both internal and external stakeholders. This role is designed to provide you with insights into Calpine's corporate views on commodity markets and the fundamental risk factors involved. Specific projects will be assigned at the start of the internship, ensuring a tailored experience that aligns with your interests and the company's needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Commercial role in project development.
  • Learn about site selection, stakeholder engagement, entitlement acquisition, and transmission interconnection process management.
  • Assist with the preparation and input of financial models and preparing presentations for meetings with counterparties.
  • Coordinate closely with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Learn about Calpine's corporate views on the commodity markets and the inherent fundamental risk factors.

Requirements

  • Candidate should be working on a Bachelor's or Master's degree at an accredited college or university in a quantitative or analytical field, such as business, mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, accounting, engineering, or physics.
  • Must have at least two years of undergraduate coursework completed by the start of the internship. Graduate students also encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum GPA 3.2.
  • Demonstrated aptitude applying analytical tools such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Able to work autonomously and under the pressure of multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the energy industry, specifically the independent power or utility sector, is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are a must.
  • Team player who enjoys diving into issues, brainstorming solutions, and learning new methods and tools to address problems.
  • High degree of enthusiasm and drive.
  • Must be flexible and able to work harmoniously with others.
  • Good problem solving and analytical ability.
  • Good organization skills and attention to details are essential.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the energy industry, specifically the independent power or utility sector.
