About the position

The Structural Engineer Internship at Barr Engineering offers an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in structural engineering through project assignments related to hydropower facilities, wind turbine foundations, and industrial processing facilities. Interns will engage in various tasks including structural design, analysis, report writing, and construction inspection, while working closely with project teams to meet client needs and deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Assist project teams with structural design and analysis tasks.
• Prepare plans and specifications for engineering projects.
• Write reports and perform cost estimating for projects.
• Conduct construction inspection and observation activities.
• Travel for fieldwork as required, up to 30% of the time.

Requirements

• Ongoing enrollment in an ABET-accredited civil or structural engineering degree program.
• Completion of at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
• Minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.
• Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness.
• Willingness to travel for fieldwork up to 30% of the time.
• Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, MathCAD, Excel, and structural engineering analysis software such as RISA 3D or STAAD Pro.
• Completion of at least one semester of upper division engineering coursework, including structural analysis, steel design, and concrete design.
