About the position

Calpine Corporation is seeking an undergraduate intern for its Financial Analysis team, providing a unique opportunity for students pursuing a career in finance to gain hands-on experience in the power generation industry. This internship is designed to enhance the intern's knowledge of natural gas, solar, storage assets, and various aspects of Calpine's business operations. The intern will work a standard 40-hour work week at the Corporate Office in Houston, TX, with the possibility of remote work. The role will involve supporting the Financial Analysis team in various tasks, contributing to the intern's professional development and understanding of financial analysis within the energy sector. The internship will encompass a range of responsibilities, including preparing and analyzing monthly variance reports and cost statements, assisting in corporate and project-level debt financings, and coordinating accounting information from various departments. The intern will also engage in financial analysis and valuation of capital allocation initiatives, assist in the preparation of departmental budgets and metrics, and develop and maintain job processes and procedures. Additionally, the intern will research modeling techniques, analyze competitors and transactions, and utilize Bloomberg terminal data for analysis. Specific projects will be assigned throughout the internship, providing a comprehensive learning experience in financial analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and analyzes portions of the monthly variance analysis and cost statements including forecast updates.
  • Assists in corporate and project level debt financings.
  • Assists in coordination of accounting information from directors/managers.
  • Assists in financial analysis and valuation of capital allocation initiatives.
  • Assists with preparation of department budget and metrics.
  • Develops and maintains job processes and procedures.
  • Researches modeling techniques, competitors, and transactions.
  • Analyzes Bloomberg terminal/data.
  • Specific projects will be determined throughout the internship.

Requirements

  • Must have at least two years of undergraduate coursework completed by the start of the internship.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Finance at an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States now and in the future.
  • Proficiency in building financial models and creating complex Excel models.
  • Demonstrated aptitude applying analytical tools such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Able to work autonomously and under the pressure of multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Microsoft Office products (VBA, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team player who enjoys diving into issues, brainstorming solutions, and learning new methods and tools to address problems.
  • High degree of enthusiasm and drive.
  • Must be flexible and able to work harmoniously with others.
  • Good problem solving and analytical ability.
  • Good organization skills and attention to details are essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Must be able to follow instructions precisely and be detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week.
  • Self-motivated team player.
