About the position

The Interpreter for American Sign Language (ASL) position at the Social Security Administration in Atlanta, GA, is responsible for providing interpretation services for deaf or hearing-impaired employees. This role involves interpreting technical conversations, meetings, and training sessions, as well as teaching basic sign language to staff. The position requires proficiency in ASL and certification as a qualified interpreter, with a focus on facilitating effective communication within the office.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an interpreter for deaf or hearing-impaired employees at the Atlanta Downtown Field Office.
  • Interpret spoken language and conversations of a highly technical nature for employees who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Interpret for employees in meetings, trainings, and conferences held in person, by teleconference, or video conference.
  • Assist in face-to-face interviews with members of the public and intra-office meetings.
  • Travel with employees to conferences and workshops as directed by the supervisor.
  • Establish, teach, and evaluate courses in basic sign language for office staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) required.
  • Certification as a 'Certified' or 'Qualified' interpreter from a recognized organization (e.g., RID or NAD).
  • Four years of paid professional experience within the last six years as an interpreter for technical material.
  • Fluency in expressive and receptive skills in ASL, manually coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in interpreting for government agencies or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of Social Security Administration policies and procedures.
