About the position

The Sign Language Interpreter at the University of Rochester provides essential interpreting services for clinical staff, patients, and caregivers across various healthcare settings. This role is crucial in facilitating effective communication and understanding between deaf/hard-of-hearing patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that all parties can engage fully in the healthcare process. The interpreter will work autonomously in diverse environments, including inpatient and ambulatory settings, while also participating in cultural mediation and educational efforts to enhance the overall patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides sign language interpreting services for clinical staff, patients, and caregivers.
  • Interprets individual, multidisciplinary, and group encounters in various settings including inpatient and emergency environments.
  • Manages communication flow during healthcare encounters and prepares for interpreting sessions.
  • Maintains transparency and promotes patient autonomy during clinical encounters.
  • Collaborates with team interpreters to ensure message accuracy and comprehension.
  • Responds to interpreting requests outside of office hours, triaging and prioritizing as necessary.
  • Communicates with care teams to provide timely interpreting services.
  • Conducts patient rounds as needed.
  • Facilitates cultural mediation to enhance understanding between patients and providers.
  • Educates URMC staff on best practices for working with interpreters and deaf/hard-of-hearing patients.
  • Engages in continuing education to maintain and enhance interpreting skills.
  • Completes administrative duties and mandatory training in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 2 years post-high school education preferred.
  • 2 years interpreting in a healthcare setting strongly preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Fluency in English and ASL required.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests, and procedures in working languages required.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills required.
  • RID, NAD, BEI level II certification required (Written required, performance within 18 months of hire).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting beyond the required 2 years.
  • Additional certifications in interpreting or related fields.
