About the position

The Interpreter Per Diem for American Sign Language (ASL) at Steward Health Care is responsible for providing medical interpretation services to patients and staff members, particularly for those who are limited English proficient (LEP), Deaf, or hard of hearing. This role involves facilitating communication in various modalities, ensuring compliance with hospital policies, and supporting the operations of the interpreter services department.

Responsibilities

  • Relay medical information between speakers of two different languages in face-to-face, telephonic, and video interpreting modalities.
  • Reduce linguistic barriers for patients and family members who are LEP, Deaf, or hard of hearing.
  • Facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers by explaining hospital resources and protocols.
  • Perform office operations such as answering phones, confirming appointments, and documenting encounters.
  • Utilize online computer systems and hospital software for various tasks.
  • Support financial counseling processes and community outreach events as needed.
  • Review short translations as directed by the manager.
  • Maintain and monitor Interpreter and Disability Equipment.
  • Serve as a resource for staff regarding patients with disabilities.
  • Support all campuses and off-site locations as required.

Requirements

  • Strong linguistic skills, including understanding regional accents and selecting appropriate modes of interpretation.
  • Ability to interpret with high accuracy in consecutive and sight translation modes.
  • Strong writing skills in both English and target languages.
  • Understanding of cultural expressions in language and ability to mediate intercultural communication.
  • Strong interpreting skills, including managing the flow of communication and maintaining professional integrity.
  • Organizational skills to manage stressful situations and handle multiple tasks effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology in both English and target languages.
