About the position

The Interpreter (Sign Language) position at the Department of the Treasury involves providing communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing employees through interpreting services. The role requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), Contact Variety Sign (CVS), and Manually Coded English (MCE), facilitating effective communication in various settings, including meetings and training sessions. This position is crucial for ensuring inclusivity and accessibility within the workplace, particularly in specialized discussions that involve technical vocabulary related to tax and finance.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets in various settings for deaf/hard of hearing employees and hearing persons unfamiliar with sign language.
  • Simultaneously and consecutively interprets/transliterates between ASL, CVS, MCE, and English.
  • Uses oral forms of communication for oral deaf or hard of hearing individuals.
  • Provides tactile interpreting for deaf-blind individuals as needed.
  • Interprets for specialized meetings, seminars, and training programs with technical vocabularies.
  • Facilitates communication in formal and informal meetings between deaf/hard of hearing employees and supervisors.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status with proof of citizenship required.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service.
  • Experience in interpreting between English and ASL, CVS, and MCE.
  • Knowledge of interpreting processes and effective communication methods for deaf/hard of hearing individuals.
  • Experience in developing training curriculum for sign language courses.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with telecommunication devices and assistive listening technology for deaf/hard of hearing employees.
  • Familiarity with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
