The Interpreter position at Texas Children's Hospital involves providing interpreting and translation services to facilitate communication between healthcare staff, patients, and families. The position is specifically for the Night Shift and requires a commitment to maintaining a positive image of the hospital while adhering to professional ethics in interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oral interpreting services for various hospital areas including inpatient, outpatient, day surgery, and emergency center.
  • Interprets clinical and healthcare-related discussions involving staff, patients, families, and physicians.
  • Responds to interpreting assignments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintains proper medical terminology vocabulary and fluency in both English and Spanish.
  • Facilitates information exchange by interpreting without editorializing and adhering to a code of professional ethics.
  • Delivers video remote interpreting (VRI) devices to units/clinics and provides instructions on their use.
  • Provides accurate interpretation services over the telephone for various hospital areas.
  • Triages telephone requests and transfers calls to the appropriate person/department.
  • Provides written translation services for discharge instructions, patient communication notices, and educational materials.
  • Ensures that interpretation appointment schedules are maintained accurately and timely.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Assumes on-call duties on a rotating basis.
  • Advises medical staff on international customs and norms to enhance relations and cooperation.
  • Assists the department secretary with phone calls and voicemails.
  • Performs minimal clerical duties as needed.
  • Assists with the orientation of services available to international patients and families.
  • Serves as a liaison between international patients and various service areas within the organization.
  • Tracks scheduled appointments and provides reminder calls to families 24 hours prior to appointments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 2 years of related healthcare experience required.
  • 2 years of in-person healthcare interpreter experience preferred.
  • Certification for Medical Interpretation from NBCMI or CCHI preferred.
