About the position

The Inventory LBM Specialist at Groom & Sons is a hands-on role focused on managing inventory for lumber and building materials (LBM). This position emphasizes customer service, teamwork, and continuous improvement within a dynamic work environment. The specialist will oversee inventory management, assist customers, and ensure efficient operations while maintaining a safe and organized workspace.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all LBM inventory, including special orders, open orders, counts, and adjustments.
  • Perform regular audits to reconcile physical inventory with system records, ensuring data accuracy and minimizing discrepancies.
  • Help identify and resolve shrinkage issues, focusing on significant areas like shingles and plywood.
  • Maintain a consistent, pleasant, customer service-oriented image to customers.
  • Retain accurate inventory records and databases including item descriptions, quantities, and locations.
  • Monitor stock levels and place replenishment orders as necessary, keeping inventory at optimal levels.
  • Assist customers with LBM-related inquiries and provide exceptional service in person or over the phone.
  • Ensure that inventory is organized, accessible, and efficiently stored in the warehouse or sales floor.
  • Safely operate a forklift for inventory management and material handling.
  • Generate inventory reports, track turnover rates, and report discrepancies or issues to management.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized sales floor and storage areas.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support operations and ensure the team can provide exceptional customer service.
  • Partner with the inventory support center team and store employees to learn best practices before transitioning to full responsibility for LBM inventory management.
  • Continuously improve procedures and processes by collaborating with team members and sharing ideas with leadership.
  • Cross-train in other areas to become a well-rounded team member and provide assistance as needed.
  • Stay current on industry trends by completing assigned training, conducting independent research, attending relevant courses, and networking with industry professionals.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in LBM or construction-related industries highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in inventory management required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree, or relevant industry certifications, are a plus but not required.
  • Proficiency in inventory management software and MS Office.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, reach, bend, twist, kneel, and stock items in high areas (with or without assistance).
  • 1-2 years of forklift experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers and coworkers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while remaining adaptable and flexible.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with willingness to consistently provide superior customer service skills.
  • A commitment to providing excellent customer service, supporting the store's operations with humility and dedication to the company's values.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed based on operational requirements.
