About the position

This internship position is designed for a student to support a research and development project focused on the creation of a hardware testbed featuring programmable inverters. The selected candidate will work closely with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) team during the fall semester of 2024, specifically from August to December. The role involves a combination of theoretical and practical tasks, including the development of advanced inverter models and conducting experiments in a laboratory setting. The student will be expected to engage in various aspects of inverter technology, particularly in the context of grid forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) systems, which are crucial for modern power systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge field, contributing to the advancement of energy technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop grid forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) inverter models in electromagnetic transients (EMT) simulation tools.
  • Program inverter microcontrollers.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments on a hardware testbed.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • 2 years of PhD studies (preferred).
  • Strong experience with inverter controls.
  • Strong experience with microcontroller programming (preferably Texas Instruments C2000).
  • Strong experience with electromagnetic transients simulation tools (preferably PSCAD and Simulink).
  • Strong programming skills (preferably Python and Matlab).
