About the position

The Investigator Level I position at the Snohomish County Public Defender Association (SCPDA) involves conducting investigations to support attorneys in defending indigent clients. The role emphasizes client-centered advocacy, collaboration, and professional development, aligning with SCPDA's mission to provide high-quality legal representation while promoting antiracism and inclusivity.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with state and defense witnesses, including law enforcement and complainants, to gather case-related information.
  • Visit crime scenes to collect evidence, including photographs, measurements, and videos.
  • Communicate regularly with assigned attorneys regarding case developments.
  • Review evidence and become familiar with case files.
  • Obtain civil and criminal records for all parties involved in cases.
  • Prepare reports detailing findings, witness statements, and scene descriptions.
  • Update contact information for involved parties, including skip tracing missing individuals.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation, which may include locating potential witnesses.
  • Review medical, school, and other records for involved parties.
  • Serve subpoenas for witnesses and records, and order 911 tapes and CAD reports.
  • Testify in court and visit jails as necessary.
  • Provide assistance to Level I investigators and interns.
  • Maintain knowledge of current investigative practices and procedures.
  • Foster collaboration and cooperation with all Defenders and court stakeholders.
  • Engage in antiracism learning and contribute to a respectful workplace environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the criminal justice system or investigations.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in email, word processing, and online research.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Valid Washington state driver's license and a working vehicle.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to speak and converse in Spanish, enhancing performance in duties.
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required by case demands.
