About the position

Symetra's Investment Accounting team is looking to add a new manager with a focus on investment accounting for our diversified portfolio. We are looking for an individual with strong technical skills and asset knowledge as well as superior communication, people management and coaching abilities. As the Manager of Finance, you will be working with a diverse investment portfolio including bonds, stocks, mortgage loans, derivatives, hedge funds, limited partnerships and tax credits and working closely with Symetra's asset managers, Investment Operations, Investment Reporting as well as reporting teams and policy research specialists to ensure accurate understanding of assets and their financial presentation and disclosure requirements. You will be a part of a team with other investment accounting professionals and will provide management and coaching to their direct reports as well as others on the team. In this role, you will provide guidance to a team of diverse Investment Accounting professionals with varying asset knowledge and experience related to multiple asset types, projects and process improvements. You will lead the team to execute the day-to-day financial activities and ensure timely and accurate completion of deliverables. Managing several individuals directly, you will provide 1-on-1 customized coaching. Regular collaboration with our Investment Management team will be essential to understand new assets and investments, ensuring the applicable accounting is implemented. You will maintain an ongoing partnership with the reporting teams to ensure reporting and disclosures are accurate and all queries are being appropriately addressed. As a finance expert, you will serve Symetra management in their areas of expertise and understanding of the organization's key business processes to effectively drive operational and systems effectiveness. Additionally, you will drive process improvements and foster a strong customer service orientation while handling ad hoc requests and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to a team of diverse Investment Accounting professionals with varying asset knowledge and experience related to multiple asset types, projects and process improvements.
  • Lead the team to execute the day-to-day financial activities and ensure timely and accurate completion of deliverables.
  • Manage several individuals directly and provide 1-on-1 customized coaching.
  • Work regularly with our Investment Management team to understand new assets and investments and ensure the applicable accounting is implemented.
  • Ongoing partnership with the reporting teams ensuring reporting and disclosures are accurate and all queries are being appropriately addressed.
  • Serve as a finance expert to Symetra management in their areas of expertise and understanding of the organization's key business processes to effectively drive operational and systems effectiveness.
  • Drive process improvements and foster strong customer service orientation.
  • Handle ad hoc requests and projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, required
  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience leading individuals in meeting their deliverables
  • Experience working with investments, preferably in investment accounting, reporting or operations required
  • Experience working with hedge funds, private equities and/or derivatives preferred
  • Experience in Financial Services industry preferred
  • Experience with GAAP and STAT accounting and reporting preferred
  • CPA or CMA preferred
  • Robust communication skills and the ability to explain complex policies and accounting concepts to your team members, peers in other departments as well as management
  • Strong coaching abilities and a history of successful coaching and mentoring of others
  • A history of being a successful team member and team player
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (month, quarter and year-ends, ad hoc)

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with hedge funds, private equities and/or derivatives preferred
  • Experience in Financial Services industry preferred
  • Experience with GAAP and STAT accounting and reporting preferred
  • CPA or CMA preferred
