The Investment Accounting Manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota plays a crucial role in managing the financial reporting and accounting for the Investment and Treasury departments. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial, management, and regulatory reporting specific to these areas. The role involves the implementation and execution of financial policies, procedures, and controls for all general ledger activities, including interfaces, journal entries, and monthly financial reporting processes. The Investment Accounting Manager and their team report directly to the Vice President of Treasury & Chief Investment Officer, highlighting the importance of this role within the organization. In a typical day, the Investment Accounting Manager will oversee the proper recording of multiple interfaces and journal entries for various companies, market segments, and business units using SAP. This includes establishing appropriate accounting methodologies in compliance with both GAAP and STAT requirements. The manager will also direct, review, and distribute monthly financial statements and management reports, providing accurate and relevant information for business decisions. This involves collaboration with various levels of corporate management, including subsidiaries, to interpret and analyze financial results and variances to budget and forecast, as well as assisting in developing budget and forecast projections. Additionally, the Investment Accounting Manager is responsible for preparing numerous external regulatory filings, including those required by NAIC, BCBS Association, CMS, and the Department of Commerce. The role requires coordination across departments to ensure accuracy and timely filing, as well as collaboration with external auditors for annual and interim audits. The manager will serve as a technical resource on Statutory Accounting Principles, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and internal accounting policies, providing leadership and recommendations for technical investment and accounting strategies. The position also involves managing the department, including interviewing and hiring employees while ensuring compliance with EEO and Affirmative Action guidelines. Responsibilities

  • Manage the proper recording of multiple interfaces and journal entries for related companies, market segments, and business units using SAP.
  • Establish proper accounting methodologies in accordance with GAAP and STAT requirements.
  • Direct, review, and distribute monthly financial statements and management reporting and analysis.
  • Work with corporate management and subsidiaries regarding financial results and variance analysis.
  • Assist in developing budget and forecast projections.
  • Manage and review the preparation of external regulatory filings including NAIC, BCBS Association, CMS, and Department of Commerce.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual and interim audit work and support periodic regulatory audits.
  • Serve as the technical investment and treasury accounting resource on Statutory Accounting Principles and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Provide leadership investment accounting recommendations for technical investment and accounting strategies.
  • Direct or provide ad hoc project assistance as requested by executive management or business partners.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships throughout the organization for financial data requests.
  • Promote continuous enhancement and improvement of financial systems, processes, and reporting capabilities.
  • Work with SAP support staff to develop, test, and implement enhanced solutions.
  • Manage the department, including interviewing and hiring employees and ensuring proper training.
  • Lead and develop a diverse talent by providing an inclusive environment that promotes diversity of thought and team engagement.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of related professional experience in general accounting, financial reporting, or internal controls.
  • 1 year of staff, project lead, or team lead experience.
  • Expert knowledge of financial markets, enterprise treasury, investments, and risk management best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, including understanding of complex investment concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of the regulatory environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management ability, with flexibility to handle various responsibilities.
  • Broad knowledge of NAIC, SEC, and IRS rules and regulations.
  • Strong computer skills in Bloomberg, FactSet, SAP, Blackline, Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA or advanced degree in Finance or Finance-related area of study.
