About the position

Brown Advisory is seeking a highly motivated, intelligent, and experienced Investment Research Analyst to work for a Family Office Portfolio Manager. This role is integral to a small team that collaborates with a select number of extremely large families, focusing on their unique asset management needs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong intrinsic motivation and a keen interest in investments, with a desire to underwrite and conduct due diligence on both self-sourced and client-sourced opportunities. The position demands strong analytical skills, particularly in Excel, and a genuine thirst for learning, as well as the capability to solve complex problems under tight deadlines. The responsibilities of the Investment Research Analyst include participating in portfolio management activities tailored to the sophisticated needs of family office clients. This encompasses managing liquidity needs and analyzing various investment types, including equity, fixed income, and alternative investments. The analyst will also conduct in-depth due diligence on a wide range of investment opportunities, focusing on filtering which opportunities meet the criteria for further analysis. Additionally, the role involves generating investment ideas by attending meetings and conferences, building a network with other family offices to gather unique deal flow, and maintaining a comprehensive database of investment information. The analyst will perform detailed analyses of existing and prospective client investment portfolios, creating tailored materials and reports. Ad hoc tasks requested by the portfolio manager, such as market research and performance reporting, will also be part of the role. The position is based in the Washington D.C. office, requiring the analyst to work on-site five days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in portfolio management activities for large, sophisticated family office clients.
  • Conduct in-depth due diligence on a variety of investment opportunities, including individual stocks and private deals.
  • Set up and attend investment manager meetings and conferences to gather information on investments.
  • Build a network of family offices to collect differentiated deal flow.
  • Update and maintain a database of quantitative and qualitative information about investments.
  • Perform detailed analyses of existing and prospective client investment portfolios and create client-specific reports.
  • Conduct ad hoc tasks as requested by the portfolio manager, including market research and performance analysis.
  • Prepare reports on specific investment opportunities across different strategies or asset classes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Economics.
  • Minimum of 5 years investment management experience.
  • Excellent quantitative reasoning abilities and experience with statistical methods.
  • Expert-level Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • General knowledge of financial markets with a strong interest in private investments.
  • Strong academic background with emphasis on quantitative and/or financial coursework.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Ability and desire to learn about a wide range of investment strategies.
  • High integrity and extremely strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work in the Washington D.C. office five days a week.
