About the position

The IOT Automation Engineer at Caterpillar Inc. will play a pivotal role in transforming the Decatur factory into a connected facility by integrating assets into the IOT network. This position focuses on designing, implementing, and managing IOT solutions to enhance operational efficiency, improve data visibility, and enable real-time decision-making. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of IOT technologies and support the factory's digital transformation goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement IOT solutions to connect factory assets to the IOT network, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
  • Manage the technical aspects of the project, including defining and clarifying project scope, preparing project documentation, and facilitating meetings with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, engineering, and operations, to ensure successful deployment and integration of IOT technologies.
  • Oversee the collection, storage, and analysis of data from connected assets to improve operational efficiency and support real-time decision-making.
  • Drive innovation by identifying opportunities for new IOT applications and improvements to existing systems.
  • Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for IOT systems and connected assets.
  • Ensure that all IOT solutions comply with industry standards and regulations, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Develop training materials and provide training to staff on the use and maintenance of IOT systems. Maintain comprehensive documentation of all IOT projects and systems.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Familiarity with Kepware software, including KEPServerEX, and the ability to configure and manage Kepware servers.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block Diagram.
  • Experience in integrating data from PLCs and controllers into a centralized system, such as an IoT platform or cloud database.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts, including IP addressing, subnetting, and network security.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving issues related to data extraction and communication between devices.
  • Ability to document technical processes, create user manuals, and generate reports on system performance and data trends.

  • Bachelor's degree related to Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field of study.
  • Progressive project management experience.
