About the position

The IS Business Intelligence Data Architect plays a crucial role in overseeing and developing MedStar Health's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), data marts, and data pipelines. This position is responsible for designing and implementing database and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions that empower the organization to extract valuable insights from data. The Data Architect collaborates closely with stakeholders and subject matter experts to document requirements for data marts, dashboards, and data extracts, translating these requirements into detailed technical design specifications. Additionally, the role involves working with MedStar Health's EDW vendor to manage data warehouse data pipelines and optimize the EDW platform, ensuring that data governance and standardization practices are adhered to across the organization. In this position, the Data Architect will participate in various cross-functional activities related to data governance, standardization of data and reporting, and the utilization of BI reports across all business areas. The architect will contribute to achieving established departmental goals and objectives while adhering to departmental policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. A thorough understanding of database technologies, data integration, and BI tools is essential for success in this role. The Data Architect will create and maintain accurate design documentation for new projects and existing reporting artifacts, ensuring a comprehensive repository of data architecture and design artifacts and procedures. The role also includes operational responsibilities, such as assisting in the maintenance of the EDW data pipelines, scheduling data pipeline execution, monitoring results, and remediating any data pipeline errors. The Data Architect will lead multiple design and development projects involving various stakeholder groups, delivering cohesive data solutions that meet business, technical, and data governance requirements using the EDW and MedStar Health's enterprise reporting solutions. Establishing architectural guidelines for the data and analytics environment in areas such as scalability, security, performance, data recovery, reliability, and usability is a key responsibility, as is applying these guidelines to the design and implementation of EDW, reporting, and analytics projects. Furthermore, the Data Architect will lead development teams in building and validating data marts, dashboards, and extracts, ensuring that performance and validation tasks are executed effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in architectural oversight and development for MedStar Health's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), data marts, and data pipelines.
  • Design and implement database and BI solutions to derive valuable insights for the business.
  • Document requirements for data marts, dashboards, and data extracts in collaboration with stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Translate documented requirements into technical design specifications.
  • Manage data warehouse data pipelines in collaboration with MedStar Health's EDW vendor and optimize the EDW platform.
  • Participate in cross-functional activities related to data governance and standardization of data and reporting.
  • Create and maintain accurate design documentation for new projects and existing reporting artifacts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the EDW metadata repository.
  • Assist in the operations and maintenance of the EDW data pipelines, including scheduling execution and monitoring results.
  • Lead multiple design and development projects with various stakeholder groups, delivering cohesive data solutions that meet business, technical, and data governance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience in data integration, database design, and development required.
  • 3-4 years of experience in BI reporting and analysis, with advanced skills using BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI required.
  • 1-2 years of knowledge of and experience with statistical analysis and modeling required.
  • Experience with data warehousing models, designing processes for complex data structures, and using best practices in data integration required.
  • Ability to write complex SQL queries.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous concepts into tangible ideas and present products such as design documents and reports to a broad audience.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in the practical use of SQL, Python, and Tableau.
  • Excellent interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio, and PowerPoint.
