About the position

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, IT Services Division is seeking a Database Administrator Analyst III to join the Applications Development Team in Boise. This role is pivotal in ensuring the health, safety, and independence of Idahoans by managing and optimizing database systems that serve the citizens of Idaho. The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of technology. In this role, the Database Administrator Analyst III will be responsible for designing and installing large, complex database management systems, ensuring the security, quality, and integrity of data resources. The position requires a proactive approach to researching opportunities for improving database technology standards and identifying best practices. The successful candidate will manage assigned databases and associated applications to ensure uninterrupted availability of information to users, implement necessary procedures and controls to protect data, and provide guidance on the effective and secure use of organizational data. Additionally, the role includes providing on-call support to production databases outside of normal working hours, collaborating with team members to ensure optimal database performance and reliability. This position is not only about technical skills but also about fostering a collaborative environment where team members can learn and grow together. Candidates who are relocating to Idaho should note that the department does not reimburse relocation costs and does not sponsor work visas.

Responsibilities

  • Design and install large, complex database management systems.
  • Ensure the security, quality, and integrity of data resources.
  • Research opportunities to improve database technology standards and identify best practices.
  • Ensure effective management of assigned databases and associated applications to provide uninterrupted availability of information to users.
  • Design and implement procedures and controls necessary to protect information system data.
  • Provide guidance and direction both within IT and among users for the effective and secure use of organizational data.
  • Perform database performance tuning and database storage forecasting.
  • Provide on-call support to production databases outside normal work hours, on a rotating basis with other team members.

Requirements

  • Experience installing, administering and monitoring production databases and database servers (minimum one year).
  • Experience monitoring and tuning the performance of databases, queries and indexes (minimum one year).
  • Experience developing procedures and controls to ensure database security, integrity and availability (minimum one year).
  • Experience resolving complex database problems (minimum two years or one year of level-three database escalation tickets).
  • Experience training and mentoring staff on the effective and secure use of data (minimum one year).
  • Experience in database resource planning (minimum one year).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a SQL Server DBA in a Windows Server Environment (typically 5 years).
  • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO) of databases (typically 5 years).
  • Experience with backups, restores, recovery models including High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server in a clustered environment (minimum 2 years).
  • Experience securing data at rest, masking data, and patching SQL databases on Windows Servers (minimum 2 years).
  • Experience in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integrated Services (SSIS), Data Warehousing, and Azure SQL Database (minimum 2 years).
