About the position

The IT Database Administrator III position at Fayetteville State University is a critical role within the Information Technology Services (ITS) department, tasked with designing, documenting, configuring, implementing, and managing various databases that support a wide range of applications and processes. This position is essential for ensuring the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software, which is vital for achieving the university's academic and administrative objectives as outlined in the strategic plan. The IT Database Administrator III will be involved in the planning and development of databases, troubleshooting issues on behalf of users, and advising management on database concepts and capabilities. In this role, the IT Database Administrator III will support, administer, and maintain the Banner ERP system, including its various applications and integrated products. Responsibilities include installing, configuring, and maintaining SQL Server database systems, responding to database access and performance issues, and monitoring system details to implement efficiency improvements. The position also requires planning and coordinating data migrations, developing change control processes, and establishing appropriate end-user database access levels. Additionally, the administrator will provide second and third-level support for incidents reported by tier-one support and will assist with the implementation of new software and upgrades. The IT Database Administrator III will also play a strategic role in assessing and developing long-term goals for production databases, working with application staff to establish coding standards and quality assurance policies, and contributing to disaster recovery and business continuity planning. This position requires a strong understanding of the Banner ERP system, database optimization, application programming, and report writing, as well as the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Support, administer, and maintain the Banner ERP system, including Application Navigator, Administrative and Self-Service Applications, ESM, and integrated products.
  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server database systems.
  • Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
  • Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases.
  • Build and configure Banner modules to perform needed functionality according to documented processes and procedures.
  • Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels.
  • Develop routines for end users to facilitate best practices in database use and system integration.
  • Understand the needs and requirements of the applications using the databases and provide support for these applications.
  • Manage multiple applications accessing the same database.
  • Write and debug lines of SQL code for applications.
  • Installation of patches and upgrades, including both standalone and clustered server environments.
  • Assist with the implementation of new software and upgrades of existing software.
  • Assess and develop long-term strategic goals for production databases in conjunction with data owners and department managers.
  • Work with application staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing and testing a disaster recovery and business continuity plan.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, or a closely related field with two to four years of experience in database management/data integration OR a Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, or a closely related field with three to five years of experience in data management/data integration OR an Equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • 3+ years of equivalent work experience in a position responsible for managing, upgrading, and migrating databases and applications in an Ellucian Banner environment.
  • Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring, and supporting database servers and applications, such as SQL Server, Oracle Database, MySQL.
  • Extensive experience programming in PL/SQL and the ability to quickly and efficiently produce both SQL queries and custom PL/SQL code.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with stored procedures and optimizing them to improve overall database performance.
  • Experience with enterprise-level applications including Banner Workflow, NextGen, and AppWorx/UC4/Automic.
  • Familiarity with the Banner data model and its naming conventions, with experience extracting and transforming this information for various purposes.

Nice-to-haves
