About the position

The IT Electrical Engineering Intern - RTU SCADA (Distribution) at FirstEnergy is a full-time, paid internship designed for students pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. The intern will engage in professional-level work, contributing actively to the team while receiving on-the-job training. The role focuses on supporting Distribution Management Systems (DMS) through the design, development, and maintenance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and enhance FirstEnergy's DMS for situational awareness of electrical system conditions.
  • Develop configurations for SCADA to facilitate monitoring and control of substations and line devices.
  • Maintain, support, and enhance the SCADA and RTU components of the DMS.
  • Assist with administration, maintenance, and upgrades to the software.
  • Manage, test, and check out SCADA changes in various environments.
  • Support Distribution system operators and engineers in using the DMS.
  • Develop and communicate system documentation, version release notes, and training material.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering at an accredited university/college.
  • Class standing as a Rising Sophomore or Rising Junior.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Must be local to Akron, Cleveland, or Canton areas.
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two Intern rotations.
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong knowledge of basic network concepts.
  • Proficiency in PC usage, particularly Windows 10.
  • Familiarity with MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and MS Outlook.
  • Effective teamwork skills and ability to manage concurrent assignments.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Highly motivated to work independently and learn quickly.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize and plan work effectively.
  • Ability to work remotely using virtual technologies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
