About the position

As an IT Finance and HR Planning Analyst Intern at FirstEnergy, you will be immersed in a professional development program designed to cultivate your skills while performing meaningful work. This internship is not just about observation; you will actively contribute to the team, engaging in the same tasks as full-time employees. Over the course of 14 weeks, you will receive comprehensive on-the-job training, challenging assignments, and support from a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor, and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator. This structure is aimed at maximizing your learning and growth throughout the summer and beyond. The primary objective of this role is to familiarize yourself with the fundamental business practices involved in planning, maintaining, and analyzing IT financials. Key responsibilities will include tracking month-end accruals and journals, assisting leadership with project budgets, preparing for both short and long-term financial forecasts, coordinating resources to align labor hours, and maintaining employee staffing. You will also engage in business process understanding, application installation and configuration, project management, unit testing, and troubleshooting, all of which are essential for providing high-quality support for our systems and their related interfaces. In this role, you will support the planning of IT forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis reporting processes for an annual IT budget exceeding $200 million. You will utilize various financial systems to extract and manipulate data, creating meaningful financial reports. Additionally, you will assist with month-end financial reporting and variance analysis, learn the components of planning and reporting processes, and understand the strategy behind investigating and correcting financial inaccuracies within cost collectors or general ledger accounts. Your responsibilities will also include reinforcing tasks associated with the cost collector lifecycle, learning accounting concepts, and assisting with various ad-hoc reporting requests. You will be expected to demonstrate professionalism while providing customer service to IT leadership and collaborating with other departments within IT, accounting, and finance.

Responsibilities

  • Support planning of IT forecasting, budgeting and variance analysis reporting process for the >$200M annual IT budget
  • Utilize various financial systems to extract and manipulate data to create meaningful financial reports
  • Assist with month-end financial reporting and variance analysis
  • Learn components of planning and reporting processes including analyzing data, interpreting results, and assisting clients with reporting of information
  • Understand strategy behind investigating and correcting any financial inaccuracies within cost collectors or general ledger accounts
  • Reinforce and support tasks associated with cost collector lifecycle
  • Learn accounting concepts (accruals, journals and amortizations) and accounting treatment (tax, capital or expense, etc.) of technology solutions
  • Assist with various ad-hoc reporting requests
  • Understand headcount reconciliation process utilizing organization chart data
  • Update resource information with appropriate budget salary and overhead data
  • Demonstrate professionalism while providing customer service to IT leadership
  • Collaborate with other departments of IT, accounting and finance

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Management, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, or related field
  • Class Standing - Rising JUNIOR or SOPHOMORE
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional Coursework in the Computer Science discipline is highly preferred
  • Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet proficiency including manipulating data, creating and modifying pivot tables, and formatting information to be easily consumed by all levels of employee and management
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds
