About the position

The IT Network and Systems Engineer position at Alta Equipment Company is a senior staff role within the IT Infrastructure Team, located in Livonia, MI. This position is designed for a dedicated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to the development and implementation of technology-based solutions. The engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues, with a specific focus on networking, including LAN, WAN, and Azure Cloud Infrastructure. This role offers a hybrid/remote work arrangement, allowing for flexibility while ensuring that the infrastructure team meets its objectives. In this role, the engineer will collaborate with the infrastructure team to design and implement various projects, taking into account potential risks and impacts. Key responsibilities include managing network systems' availability, performance, and uptime, as well as scheduling network changes and updates. The engineer will also work on developing robust policies and procedures to minimize downtime and ensure that all IT documentation and change request records are current. Proactive assessment of the infrastructure is essential, along with making recommendations to leverage innovative technology to enhance business productivity based on user needs and future growth. The engineer will monitor and maintain the entire business infrastructure, which includes backups, redundancy, cloud infrastructure, network access, and compliance. This position requires a strong technical background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks effectively. The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and possess a creative problem-solving mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the infrastructure team to design and implement projects in networking and cloud infrastructure.
  • Manage network systems availability, performance, and uptime.
  • Schedule network changes and updates effectively.
  • Collaborate on developing policies and procedures to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure all IT policies, procedures, documentation, and change request records are current.
  • Proactively assess infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Monitor and maintain business infrastructure including backups, redundancy, and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT related field or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years' experience as a Network Engineer.
  • Experience with Routing, software-defined networking (SDN), VPNs, and Firewalls.
  • Networking experience (OSI network layers, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnetting, and network topologies).
  • Proficient in Azure Firewall, Azure Virtual Networks, Subnets, and Network Security Groups (NSGs).
  • Experience with Azure ExpressRoute, Azure Bastion, and VPN Gateway configurations.
  • Proficient in configuring enterprise wireless networks using wireless standards and security protocols.
  • Understanding of frequency, wavelength, RF propagation, interference mitigation, and antenna design.
  • Proficient in configuring switches, including VLANs, STP, and trunking.
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
  • Creative problem solver with analytical skills and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to multitask.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Familiarity with computer programs such as Wireshark, Putty, Office 365, and Visio.

Nice-to-haves

  • Windows Server Administration experience.
  • Networking certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Network+).
  • Cloud Infrastructure experience, preferably in Microsoft 365, Azure & AWS.
  • Microsoft Active Directory Management experience.
  • Experience with UCaaS Infrastructure.
