About the position

The IT Specialist position within the National Weather Service (NWS) focuses on providing technical support and guidance for software and hardware systems. The role involves troubleshooting, optimizing network functionality, and ensuring the security and integrity of IT systems. This position is located in Anchorage, AK, and is part of a permanent, full-time appointment with potential for promotion based on performance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to users for Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software and locally developed software.
  • Resolve problems with software, hardware, and systems management.
  • Apply desktop upgrades and software deployments, install and maintain software and hardware.
  • Optimize the functionality of networks and systems; diagnose and recover failed systems.
  • Identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities and risks, maintaining server integrity and availability.
  • Provision new desktops, servers, and mobile devices; perform analysis of new and existing hardware as well as testing and acceptance of equipment.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, including strategizing IT solutions and contributing to IT security systems maintenance.
  • Knowledge of IT-related experience demonstrating competencies in attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, and problem-solving.
