About the position

The IT Support Specialist at the UTC Research Institute is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the institute's research and development facilities. This technical role involves supporting various sensing, computing, and communication components of assets such as autonomous vehicles and driving simulators. The specialist will also assist in software development efforts and support applications that impact departmental, campus, and enterprise levels.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill requests for systems, networks, software, and databases; perform routine and emergency administration tasks to maximize service availability.
  • Determine if technical solutions should be purchased or created in-house for complex projects based on university/researcher needs.
  • Support users requiring assistance with research computing hardware and software.
  • Procure equipment including computers, printers, and sensors; interact with external vendors for technical solutions.
  • Provide in-service training and guidance to faculty and students on computing resources.
  • Support problem resolution for researchers, staff, and students; document best practices for systems and tools.
  • Map research questions onto appropriate software and hardware systems as part of experimental design collaboration.
  • Monitor uptime of devices and systems; assist with inventory management.
  • Modify, deploy, implement, design, test, and manage critical projects; provide support for cloud-based platforms.
  • Research emerging technologies and threats; provide training and independently analyze complex technical problems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in IT, software development, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of technical areas and the ability to analyze problems and formulate solutions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent customer service.
  • Ability to deliver training when necessary.
  • Ability to learn and understand new and changing systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in IT, software development, or related field; and two years of experience in system administration.
