About the position

The IT Technician, Tier 1 position at Empire State is a full-time role based in Buffalo, NY, with a salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 per year. The primary function of this role is to assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of critical network infrastructure, equipment, peripherals, and user endpoints that support the Empire State Development (ESD) headquarters, datacenter, and remote office locations. The technician will play a vital role in troubleshooting and resolving Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) issues while providing end-user support for all IT-related software, equipment, and services. This position requires travel to regional office locations and ESD datacenters as necessary to support IT services and equipment. In this role, the technician will assist with the installation, configuration, and support/maintenance of IT-related equipment, infrastructure, software, and services necessary to support ESD's critical business functions and staff across various office locations. The technician will provide support to ESD staff in-person or via phone, email, and the Helpdesk ticketing solution in a courteous and efficient manner to resolve IT-related issues. The position also involves traveling to remote sites to install, configure, or troubleshoot IT-related equipment and end-user services, including network switches, SD-WAN appliances, wireless access points, printers, phones, VDI thin clients, video conferencing equipment, and cabling. The technician will be responsible for managing network-attached devices, liaising with third-party vendors, and representing ESD on IT projects when new or upgraded services are being rolled out. They will create and manage support tickets, monitor enterprise-wide wireless networks, and coordinate office visits and equipment installations with remote site personnel. Additionally, the technician will document standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment, and network connectivity at all remote offices, assist in IT disaster recovery efforts, and perform other related duties as required by IT management. The position is expected to work onsite and/or remotely, consistent with New York State and ESD guidelines and needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT-related equipment and infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve WAN and LAN issues.

  • Create and manage support tickets in response to network services degradation or equipment failure.
  • Monitor enterprise-wide wireless network and remote site connectivity.
  • Document SOPs, equipment, and network connectivity at remote offices.
  • Assist in IT disaster recovery efforts, testing, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT-related discipline with a minimum of 3 years' experience in a related field; or a 2-year degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
  • Experience in a Network Technician and IT support role.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Server operating systems (OS) 2012-2022 and Windows (OS) 10+.
  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing architecture and MS Active Directory management.
  • Experience with Voice Over IP (VOIP) and Video Teleconferencing solutions.
  • Knowledge of enterprise wireless solutions, network switches, and routers.
  • Familiarity with Dell server and desktop hardware, Cat 6 cabling, and UPS appliances.
  • Experience with VMware 7.0+ and VMware Horizon VDI solutions.
