About the position

The Assistant Health Director plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of participants and staff at the Telluride Association Summer Seminar (TASS) at Cornell University. This temporary position involves preparing for the program by reviewing medical histories, assisting during medical check-ins, and providing support during the program, including medication administration and supervision of health and safety protocols. The Assistant Health Director also accompanies participants on field trips and collaborates closely with the Health Director and other staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Review and maintain TASS participants' confidential medical histories.
  • Communicate with parents and staff to prepare for health and safety needs.
  • Assist with preparing the program infirmary.
  • Work with the Health Director and Camp Director to review health and safety plans.
  • Complete required training by the state of New York and Cornell University.
  • Assist with the implementation of the safety plan's medical components.
  • Supervise health and sanitation at the camp.
  • Conduct initial health screenings and daily health surveillance.
  • Address health emergencies and injuries, including transportation to medical care.
  • Maintain the camp medical log as instructed by the Health Director.
  • Assist with medication management for TASS participants.
  • Accompany participants on field trips.
  • Collaborate with the Health Director to ensure adequate staff availability.
  • Meet regularly with supervisors and program staff to ensure health and safety.
  • Support the Summer Program Manager in managing health and safety.

Requirements

  • Must have New York State certification as a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or emergency medical technician.
  • Must possess valid certification in first aid and CPR dated within one year of the program.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage high-stress environments, especially in emergencies.
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and flexibility.
  • Proficiency in Google Drive and web-based communication apps.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements and acceptable background check standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • New York State certification as a nurse practitioner, registered nurse, or licensed practical nurse is preferred.
  • 1+ years experience with children's summer camps or educational environments, particularly with high school students.
  • Access to a personal vehicle and clean driving record is preferred.
  • Experience with and commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
