About the position

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking an ITS Operations Tech I or II to join our TranStar team in Houston, TX. This position plays a crucial role in monitoring traffic conditions through advanced computerized surveillance and control equipment within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. The successful candidate will be responsible for disseminating vital traffic information to the public and coordinating with various governmental and private entities. The role requires a proactive approach to traffic management, including advising the public on traffic conditions using variable message signs, highway advisory radio, and low-frequency television broadcasts. As an ITS Operations Tech, you will assist in developing routine incident response scenarios and perform real-time traffic studies to determine optimal traffic routing. You will monitor traffic flow and conditions using loop detector systems, closed-circuit television systems, and automated vehicle identification systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for updating the traffic management database and using two-way radios to communicate with other transportation and law enforcement agencies. This position requires a commitment to maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others and performing other job responsibilities as assigned. The position is available at two levels: Tech I and Tech II, with the latter requiring more experience and the ability to work independently on assignments. Both roles are essential to ensuring the smooth operation of traffic management systems and require a willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and nights, as part of a rotating shift schedule. Responsibilities

  • Monitor traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment within an ITS managed area.
  • Disseminate information to the public through various forms of communication.
  • Advise the general public of traffic conditions using computerized variable message signs and highway advisory radio.
  • Assist in developing routine incident response scenarios.
  • Perform real-time traffic studies to determine traffic routing.
  • Disseminate traffic information to other governmental agencies located within the operations center.
  • Monitor traffic flow and conditions using loop detector systems and closed-circuit television systems.
  • Update traffic management database.
  • Use two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in traffic studies, analysis, computer operations, electronics, traffic management, or telecommunication operations for Tech I; 3 years for Tech II.
  • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Knowledge of freeway management system concepts and operations, traffic flow principles, and emergency response procedures.
  • Skills in collecting, sorting, and compiling data, coordinating multiple projects, and using applicable computer programs.
