About the position

The Senior Paralegal position at the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. is a hybrid role that requires the selected candidate to work in-office at least two days a week. This position is classified as a temporary to permanent hire under the Service Contract Act, with an hourly pay rate of $35.05, which includes a Health and Welfare Benefit of $4.57 per hour. The role is expected to transition to a permanent full-time position after six months of employment, with the potential for annual extensions through May 31, 2027. The work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch, except for federal holidays. The position may require travel up to 15% of the time, with prior notice and authorization. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will undergo a Public Trust Suitability Determination as part of the hiring process. The role involves assisting in legal research, document review, and providing technical support for litigation processes, particularly in e-Discovery and trial preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal, developing work products with minimal direct supervision.
  • Performs moderately complex legal research and synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use.
  • Reviews case-related materials to identify potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation.
  • Writes preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda and correspondence.
  • Conducts database reviews in Relativity, including coding, redacting, saved searches, and mass tagging.
  • Generates privilege logs and productions, communicates with opposing counsel, and manages document uploads to encrypted accounts.
  • Generates witness binders and supports onsite trials, including interviewing aggrieved persons and reviewing documents for FOIA in Relativity.
  • Provides legal and technical services to support the Department of Justice, including forensically capturing and reviewing evidence from various electronic sources.

Requirements

  • Paralegal Certificate or Juris Doctorate is required.
  • Minimum of two years of Litigation Paralegal experience is required; trial experience is extremely helpful.
  • One year of experience in Automated Litigation Support, e-Discovery Litigation Support, and Technology is required.
  • Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources is necessary.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, along with thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as Lexis Nexis and Westlaw.
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems is essential.
  • Familiarity with Electronically Stored Information (ESI) tools and knowledge of e-Discovery procedures and resources, including the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM), is required.
  • Ability to consistently deliver high-quality work under extreme pressure is very important.

Nice-to-haves

  • Trial experience is preferred.
  • Experience in e-Discovery Litigation Support is preferred.
