About the position

The position is primarily responsible for the supervision of juveniles certified as adults and pending trial who will be housed in the Juvenile Detention Facilities pursuant to further orders of the court. In some instances, a certified juvenile may be transferred to an Adult Detention facility by order of the court. The role involves providing direct day-to-day supervision to juveniles in a 24-hour detention/jail facility, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of each youth. The position requires the use of intervention techniques to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives among juveniles, as well as critical sound judgment during crisis situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise juveniles certified as adults and pending trial in a detention facility.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of each youth in the facility.
  • Provide intervention techniques to promote personal responsibility among juveniles.
  • Make critical decisions during crisis situations and conduct crisis intervention.
  • Enforce facility rules and monitor juvenile behavior, documenting incidents accurately.
  • Enter data into the AIS-adult system and coordinate hearings in adult court.
  • Serve as back-up staff, administering medications and transporting youths as necessary.
  • Conduct routine inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and pat down searches.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to an Associate's degree in Criminology, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Business Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Two years of work-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be certified as a JSO within 180 days of hire date.
  • Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Maintain 40 hours of training yearly.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Pass an extensive background investigation and mandatory drug testing.
