About the position

The Jewish Life/Midot Specialist at the JCC of Greater Baltimore plays a pivotal role in leading joyful Jewish experiences for the diverse J Camps Community. This position is designed to engage campers in grades K-8 through experiential education and activities grounded in Jewish values. The Specialist will work closely with the year-round J Life department to elevate the overall J Camps platform, fostering an appreciation for Jewish peoplehood among participants. The role is set to commence on June 24th, 2024, and will conclude on August 16th, 2024, with working hours from approximately 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM. In preparation for the camp, the Specialist will participate in several pre-camp meetings and training sessions, ensuring they are well-equipped to lead and supervise various activities. The responsibilities include administering Midot and value-based activity periods, collaborating with camp leadership and counselors, and planning weekly Shabbats in conjunction with the Music Specialist and Director of J LIFE. The Specialist will also be responsible for maintaining communication with their immediate supervisor regarding any concerns related to campers and facilities, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all participants. The work environment is fast-paced, requiring high energy and stamina to maintain constant supervision throughout the day. The Specialist will interact with staff, campers, and families, including those with special needs, making interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, participate, and administer 'Midot' and value-based activity periods for campers in grades K-8.
  • Work cooperatively with camp leadership, counselors, and other departments to lead exciting and challenging activities.
  • Collaborate with the Music Specialist and Director of J LIFE to plan weekly Shabbats.
  • Perform specific scheduled assignments, including carpool duties.
  • Keep immediate supervisor informed daily of any concerns or problems concerning campers and facilities.
  • Serve as a consistent role model for campers.
  • Ensure that campers know and follow safety procedures during camp programs.
  • Work with the Logistics Coordinator and Program Director to order supplies for all Jewish Life activities.
  • Attend pre-camp staff training.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and experience with informal Jewish education.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; college credits and formal experience in Jewish Education is preferred.
  • Desire to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to follow/give directions and work as a team member.
  • Strong leadership and organization skills.
  • Willingness to ask for assistance when needed or desired.
