About the position

The JIRA System Administrator will be responsible for the administration and management of Atlassian tools, particularly JIRA, Confluence, and Stash, within a high-visibility and high-availability environment at the NIH campus. This role involves operating, maintaining, upgrading, and troubleshooting a complex JIRA installation that supports software development and help desk operations, providing critical medical and genomic information to researchers globally. The position requires collaboration with other teams responsible for storage, security, database, networking, and hardware infrastructure, although primary responsibility in those areas is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support, develop, and administer Atlassian tools, particularly JIRA.
  • Perform general Linux administration duties for layered tools such as Apache and Nagios.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in developing small Java routines (e.g., JIRA plugins) and knowledge of Tomcat.
  • Proficiency in administering Linux servers, LAMP, etc.
  • Experience with automated configuration management tools (Puppet, Chef, etc.; Puppet preferred).
  • Fluency in programming/scripting skills for automation in at least two of Bash, Ruby, Python, and Perl.
  • General understanding of TCP/IP and related protocols (HTTP, FTP, NFS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience in Linux Systems Administration.
  • General understanding of Linux internals.
  • Ability to work as a team player with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a large, highly available Linux environment.
  • Experience with configuration management tools.
  • Experience with Git.
  • Experience supporting large web applications environments (3.5 million users per day).
  • Knowledge of cloud technology such as OpenStack.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in System Administration.
  • Experience with administrating the Atlassian product line (JIRA, Confluence, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in supporting technical and non-technical staff.
