About the position

The Florida Conservation Corps ANT Member position at Jonathan Dickinson State Park involves participating in various land management tasks in an outdoor setting. The role focuses on non-native plant removal, prescribed fire participation, and training in environmental management practices. Members will engage in hands-on conservation work while gaining valuable experience and training in environmental science and land management.

Responsibilities

  • Remove non-native plants using mechanical and chemical methods, maintaining tools and facilities (50% of total work hours).
  • Participate in 10 to 20 prescribed fires, including clean-up and maintenance of tools after completing a physical fitness test.
  • Attend Florida Department of Environmental Protection trainings, including Basic Fire Management and chemical mixing training (5-10%).
  • Monitor red cockaded woodpecker populations and engage in associated activities (5%).
  • Attend three weeklong off-site trainings/service projects throughout the year (5-10%).
  • Conduct quarterly water quality sampling (1%).
  • Remove exotic plants from a boat and maintain eelgrass fences along the Loxahatchee River (1-5%).
  • Fill out monthly timesheets and quarterly reports (1%).
  • Assist in maintaining trails and boardwalks for public enjoyment (1-5%).
  • Help with planting native plants and monitoring rare species (1-5%).
  • Work with volunteers on various projects, providing guidance on safe work practices (1%).
  • Assist local college students with research projects (1%).
  • Maintain professional relationships with team members and volunteers throughout the service term (100% of the time).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Entry-level position with less than 1 year of experience.
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot and humid environments for extended periods.
  • Basic computer skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with chainsaws and fire science.
  • Knowledge of environmental science or physical science.
