About the position

The Journalist and Podcast Host is a vital member of the communications team who works closely with departments throughout the organization as well as the local Jewish community to help connect people and foster community. The Journalist/Host will work to create content that supports the mission of the Jewish Alliance, while telling the story of Rhode Island's diverse Jewish community to the community-at-large. The Journalist/Host will work closely with the editor of Jewish Rhode Island and the Chief Content Officer to develop content based on issues facing the Jewish community and the strategic goals set forth by the Jewish Alliance. The Journalist/Host will work to maintain and improve Jewish Rhode Island's overall quality and relevance in the market. Additionally, the Journalist/Host will help conceptualize and develop podcast episodes/series that reflect the diversity, culture, challenges, and joys within Rhode Island's Jewish community. The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, excellent communication skills, and the ability to captivate audiences through compelling conversations and interviews. As the Host, you will be responsible for planning, hosting, and producing episodes that entertain, inform, and inspire our listeners, with input and assistance from the Editor and Chief Content Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research to identify stories relevant to Rhode Island's Jewish community and beyond.
  • Cover events throughout Rhode Island as assigned, interview community members, leaders, and experts to gather information for compelling news articles that are fair and unbiased.
  • Develop story ideas that encompass a wide range of topics, including but not limited to cultural events, religious practices, social issues, historical perspectives, and community initiatives.
  • Write clear, engaging, and accurate articles for publication, adhering to journalistic standards and editorial guidelines.
  • Edit and revise content as necessary for clarity, accuracy, and coherence.
  • Build and maintain relationships with members of Rhode Island's Jewish community and beyond to gain insights, foster trust, and ensure comprehensive coverage of relevant issues and events.
  • Approach reporting with cultural sensitivity and awareness of the diverse perspectives and traditions across denominations within the Jewish community.
  • Manage time effectively to meet deadlines for daily, weekly, and long-form reporting projects.
  • Work collaboratively with the Editor of Jewish Rhode Island, Chief Content Officer, fellow contributors, photographers, and other team members to brainstorm ideas, coordinate coverage, and ensure cohesive storytelling across different platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with internal clients and stakeholders to help facilitate the creation of multimedia content for the purpose of strengthening and elevating the diversity of Rhode Island's Jewish community.
  • Formulate and pitch new series ideas.
  • Research, interview, write, script, storyboard, schedule, set deadlines, and select optimal forms of media for individual projects.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and oversee the production of podcasts, including working with freelance partners on postproduction.
  • Develop a consistent voice across multiple platforms through storytelling, reporting and audio content, including expanding Jewish Rhode Island's reach by appealing to new demographic groups.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a journalist or in a similar role, with a strong portfolio of published articles and multimedia content.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and engagingly.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to conduct interviews with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Familiarity with the Jewish community and its cultural, social, and religious dynamics in Rhode Island.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build relationships with community members and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Experience in podcast production and audio storytelling is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with multimedia content creation, including video and social media.
  • Knowledge of audio editing software and podcast production tools.
  • Familiarity with Jewish traditions and values.
