About the position

The Journalist at WDET is responsible for developing and producing professional journalism content for radio broadcasts, aimed at disseminating news and information, entertaining, and broadening community awareness of important issues. This role requires specialized skills acquired through extensive training and experience, and it reports to WDET management.

Responsibilities

  • Produce daily/weekly news reports and features reflecting local, state, and national events.
  • Write and produce news programming; follow and report local news events; conduct on-air interviews and handle telephone call-ins.
  • Produce quick turnaround spots, compelling interviews, and in-depth, issue-oriented feature reports for broadcast.
  • Serve as host/anchor for WDET news programs, talk shows, and newscasts.
  • Participate in fundraising activities and pledge drives to solicit and increase station revenues.
  • Record and/or make on-air listener appeals; incorporate listener appeals into broadcasts.
  • Engage with station audiences through participation in WDET events, including broadcast remotes and community discussions.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, or social sciences, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years of recent experience writing and producing news content, with knowledge of Associated Press style.
  • Minimum three years of recent experience with audio and broadcast practices and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of public affairs, especially related to the Detroit metropolitan area.
  • Ability to understand complex topics and conduct nuanced interviews.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with digital media and social media.
  • Familiarity with radio programming and important news events.
