About the position

The Journey Maintenance/Construction Specialist at Decker Lake Youth Center plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the facilities used by the Juvenile Justice and Youth Services (JJYS). This position requires a skilled individual capable of performing a wide variety of maintenance tasks independently. The specialist will be responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing various systems and equipment, including alarm systems, HVAC units, appliances, roofing, and plumbing. The role also involves grounds work, glazing, painting, welding, snow removal, and lock maintenance. In addition to hands-on maintenance work, the specialist will provide technical consultation for project job orders, assisting in the development of project plans and estimates. The ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and other technical documents is essential. The specialist will also be expected to perform emergency preparedness planning and train staff on safety protocols. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a supportive environment focused on the rehabilitation and care of youth offenders while ensuring public safety. Candidates who are computer literate and possess strong organizational skills will be preferred, as these abilities will aid in keeping accurate records and creating reports. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and multiple years of relevant experience. The work environment can be physically demanding, requiring considerable exertion and the ability to work in potentially hazardous conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair problems in alarm systems, HVAC, appliances, roofing, grounds work, glazing, painting, plumbing, welding, snow removal, and locks.
  • Provide technical consultation to project job order originators, including the development of project plans and estimates.
  • Build, fabricate, or repair structures, equipment, and miscellaneous articles from verbal instructions, blueprints, and working drawings.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment effectively.
  • Perform emergency preparedness planning and train staff on safety protocols.
  • Read and interpret maps, plats, charts, plans, blueprints, and electrical schematics.

Requirements

  • Must be 19 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Multiple years of experience in maintenance and construction expertise is preferred.
  • Ability to use various hand tools and equipment effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to keep accurate records.

Nice-to-haves

  • Computer literacy and ability to create reports.
  • Experience in emergency preparedness planning.
