About the position

The Journeyman Lineman position at PG&E is a critical role within the Electric Transmission and Distribution department, responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to customers. This position is represented by IBEW Local 1245 and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening as it falls under DOT regulations. The role involves working throughout PG&E's service territory, primarily in California's Central Valley and Bay Area, with responsibilities that include building and maintaining electric power systems, restoring electric service, and conducting inspections of electric poles and enclosures. The work is predominantly outdoors and requires the ability to operate in various weather conditions. Journeyman Linemen are expected to perform a variety of tasks including testing, framing, and setting poles, climbing poles, splicing and terminating cables, and conducting visual inspections of electric distribution systems. They will also be involved in emergency restoration efforts and may be required to travel to different job locations as needed. The position requires a commitment to safety and adherence to company policies, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Additionally, compliance inspectors will conduct inspections and perform minor repairs, ensuring the safety and reliability of the electric distribution system. Candidates must have completed a federal or state-sanctioned line worker apprenticeship and possess a valid California Class A driving permit. The role demands physical strength, the ability to work extended hours, and a willingness to travel as required. Successful candidates will undergo a series of pre-employment tests and must complete a provisional training plan if hired provisionally. This position offers a competitive hourly wage starting at $68.54, with opportunities for career progression within the company.

Responsibilities

  • Travels to various job locations within the geographical assigned region for General Construction.
  • Reviews job work requirements and provides input regarding work for the day.
  • Loads and unloads tools, materials, and supplies into and out of vehicles at crew headquarters and job site.
  • Lifts, pulls, and carries insulators, cross-arms, equipment, tools, grounds, dampers, and other materials to and from job sites.
  • Climbs poles using boot hooks or aerial lift.
  • Tests, frames, sets, and/or anchors poles; strings electric power lines and installs cross-arms.
  • Performs substation switching; installs and replaces switches, circuit protection equipment, insulators, meters, and streetlights.
  • Hangs and energizes transformers; takes voltage readings.
  • Troubleshoots problems and determines the extent of repairs on primary and secondary overhead or underground dead legs.
  • Uses hand and power tools; digs holes by hand for pole installation; climbs ladders, poles, embankments, and towers; works at heights above 35' on poles and in aerial lifts; sets grounds; works with live circuits; and works in trenches, manholes, and confined spaces.
  • Sets and installs underground structures, locates, pulls, removes, splices, or terminates cables.
  • Operates hydraulic equipment including drills, boom truck, digger, pole tamper, hydraulic jack, and bucket truck once certified.
  • Conducts daily vehicle inspections and may provide back-up relief in the temporary absence of foreman; directs work to other crewmembers and acts as a leader.

Requirements

  • Completion of a federal or state sanctioned line worker apprenticeship with approved supporting documentation (e.g. IBEW Journeyman Lineman A Ticket).
  • Possession of a valid California Class A driving permit by the first day of employment.
  • Passed a California DMV medical exam by the first day of employment.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work and drive in all types of weather and road conditions.
  • Capable of working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel and transfer to a new headquarter upon request at any time throughout the entire PG&E service territory.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in rubber gloving and hot stick procedures.
