Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance inspections and make repairs found during inspections
  • Inspect, diagnose, and make repairs of mechanical defects on transit buses and related mechanical equipment
  • Inspect and maintain the vehicle air and brake system
  • Performs brake relines on both drum and disc brake systems
  • Performs diagnosis and repair of the engine, transmission, differential, suspension, HVAC, cooling, and fuel systems
  • Performs detailed electrical diagnosis and repairs
  • Maintains accurate records for repairs made and time worked
  • Performs road tests of transit buses to ensure reliability and accuracy of repairs made
  • Operates a variety of air and pneumatic powered tools
  • On occasions assists other mechanics as needed
  • Maintains clean work area and tools

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is preferred
  • A minimum of three years of experience including general heavy equipment, automotive maintenance, repair work or successful completion of the OCTA Apprentice Mechanic program
  • Substantial experience in repairing CNG equipment, especially buses, and completion of a recognized course in diesel or automotive mechanics is desired
  • The ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver License with P endorsement
  • Good DMV record in accordance with agency standards
  • Possession of necessary tools to perform above duties
  • Possession of approved steel-toed safety shoes for wear on the job

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of zero emissions technology is highly desirable (i.e., hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric technologies)

Benefits

  • Starting pay rate: $32.26 an hour
  • Pay rate increases incrementally according to the union contract
  • Current top wage: $41.31 after 36 months
  • Employees that work swing and graveyard shifts are eligible for a shift differential of 3% or 5% of their base pay, respectively
  • $3 more per hour can be obtained for completion and maintaining the H Series and L2 ASE certifications, with the potential to earn an extra $1 per hour for bidding into a Master Transit Bus Technician slot for a total of up to an extra $4 an hour on top of the base pay
