About the position

The Jr Electrical Engineer position at Hawaiian Electric Company involves supporting the capital construction programs through design, project engineering, and project management under the supervision of senior engineers. The role requires evaluating and applying engineering techniques, preparing design calculations, managing project budgets, and coordinating with consulting engineers. The position emphasizes adherence to company policies and participation in emergency response activities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years' relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing, with the ability to learn additional software tools.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
  • Good leadership skills including effective written, oral, and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult, and/or sensitive issues with professionalism.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.
