About the position

The Junior Automation Engineer at Newell is responsible for supporting the design and development of automation equipment and systems that enhance manufacturing processes. This role involves working independently or collaboratively with lead engineers to research, plan, and design mechanical and electromechanical systems. The engineer will also coordinate activities related to the fabrication, operation, and repair of these systems, ensuring they meet the needs of the manufacturing department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and support to the operations business team leaders regarding new fillable products and processes.
  • Ensure that any new products will be compatible with existing equipment and processes.
  • Support the purchasing department when specifying new products and equipment.
  • Participate in planning for the efficient utilization of factory space with production and other managers.
  • Plan the layout for new production/warehousing facilities or revisions to current layout.
  • Evaluate current mechanical and electromechanical systems and research alternative technologies.
  • Plan and recommend mechanical and systems changes to increase production efficiency and output.
  • Design mechanical or electromechanical solutions to achieve production goals.
  • Coordinate activities of staff or outside vendors involved in fabrication, installation, or repair of systems.
  • Research machinery and equipment specifications for production equipment and related requirements.
  • Make effective recommendations to management regarding machinery and equipment costs.
  • Confer with finance regarding costs and financing of machinery and equipment.
  • Establish completion goals and objectives for each project and monitor progress.
  • Provide guidance or direction as necessary to ensure operations function properly and resolve problems.
  • Create and apply tests for new and repaired equipment to ensure performance levels.
  • Support quality assurance by designing gauges and test equipment, and developing tolerances for products and processes.
  • Involvement in designing and specifying new processes, products, packaging, and machinery in support of automation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent preferred, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a related field.
  • At least one year of related engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Mechanical design experience with an understanding of electrical control systems preferred.
  • Good communication and organizational skills with some degree of project management ability.
  • Robotics and robotic system programming and cell design experience is a plus.
  • Ability to read and develop mechanical drawings and 3D models.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other engineers and external suppliers.
